Far Hills, N.J. – Sand Creek Station Golf Course in the Wichita area, has been selected by the United States Golf Association to host the 2014 U.S. Amateur Public Links Championship. The dates of the championship are July 14-19.

“We are very excited about taking the Amateur Public Links Championship to Sand Creek Station,” said Bill McCarthy, director of the U.S. Amateur Public Links Championship for the USGA. “The golf course will present a terrific test for these elite players and I have no doubt that the city of Newton will roll out the red carpet to make it a great experience.”

“The city of Newton is honored to be selected to host an event of this caliber at Sand Creek Station,” said Ken Hall, mayor of the city of Newton, which owns Sand Creek Station. “It will be a wonderful opportunity to showcase the course and our community on a national stage, and we look forward to hosting some of the country’s best golfers in Newton.”

This will be the first USGA championship conducted at Sand Creek Station, which opened in 2006 and is managed by KemperSports. The course was designed by Jeffrey D. Brauer and is a Certified Audubon Cooperative Sanctuary.

It takes its name from the Sand Creek, which borders several holes, and the town’s history as a stop on the Atchison, Topeka & Santa Fe Railway.

The course hosted the 2008 and 2009 Wichita State University Ladies Fall Classic, and in 2012 it will host the National Junior College Athletic Association Men’s Division I National Championship and the Kansas Golf Association’s State Amateur Championship.

The U.S. Amateur Public Links Championship was established in 1922 and is open to amateur golfers who are bona fide public-course players and have not held privileges of any course that does not extend playing privileges to the general public, or privileges of any private club maintaining its own course, and have a USGA Handicap Index® not exceeding 4.4.

The 2012 Amateur Public Links will be conducted July 9-14 at Soldier Hollow Golf Course in Midway, Utah, while the 2013 championship will be conducted July 15-20 at Laurel Hill Golf Course in Lorton, Va.

Testimonials

Hello, My name is Nick. I am a preferred player and have been golfing at your course since you opened. We golfed as a foursome on Saturday and just wanted to let you know how much we enjoyed the experience. First of all my 6 year old son recently started golfing and had pulled my putter out of my bag and I didn't notice it until I was already at the course. You all let me borrow a very nice putter for the round. I really appreciate that. Secondly, my group went on and on about how impressed they were with the friendliness of everyone who works there. We also ran into a group of guys from Manhattan that made the trip just to play at your course. They were equally impressed. This kind of hospitality is especially important to me since I regularly suggest your course to anyone and everyone I talk to about golf. There is a reason your course is nationally ranked and I believe it is equally the quality of the course and your staff. Thanks for making each person feel welcome and I look forward to teaching my 3 boys to play the game of golf at sand creek when the are ready to hit the links. A very satisfied customer

I just wanted to drop you a note to say THANK YOU, for what you do in the way of the Hero rate. I am a retired Police Officer from Washington, D.C. I served 23 years there in public service, and when I retired, I moved here to Goddard, KS. We that serve in public service, such as Law Enforcement, EMT, Fire, Or Military, don't or never will make allot of money. We don't look at ourselves as Hero's, just doing a job that we have chosen to serve the public. We very seldom get a Thank You from anybody. So when someone or an organization such as Sand Creek Station does something nice for us, it is very much appreciated. So Thank You Very Much. I hope it continues, so that I can continue to play the Best Public Golf Course in the Wichita area. Please pass on this Thank You to all your employees

I just wanted to take the time to write you about our recent experience at Sand Creek. A group of us decided to make the trip up from Wichita to check out the much talked about course you have there in Newton. Everyone I talked to on the phone was polite and professional. We arrived and were greeted with friendly customer service and the transaction couldn’t have gone any smoother. The gentleman (cannot remember his name right now) who was working the main register in the Pro Shop couldn’t have done a better job. He offered advice to two guys I was with because they are fairly new to the sport and had some questions and he never once acted rushed – took his time to make a good impression. He noticed that we were students and let us know about the special rates we could get – which was unexpected and GREAT news for all of us! We had two ladies with us who were going to walk but to our surprise, they were offered a cart without having to pay cart fees. This was yet again something we didn’t expect and were blown away to hear. I could go on and on all day about how nice the course was, how professional the staff was and what a great impression it all left with us. This will be WITHOUT A DOUBT the only course I will go to and take clients or friends to. Hope to shake your hand in person for running such a great place, thanks again for everything, there wont be a golfer I come across that I don’t spread this word to!!

Mr. Tuohey, I am a Newton resident and had the opportunity to play Sand Creek Station for the first time this past Saturday. I was extremely impressed with the course and completely enjoyed the entire experience. I have heard nothing but good comments from anyone who has had a chance to get on the course. I want to wish you the best of luck and I look forward to many years of great golfing at Sand Creek Station. I look forward to bringing the rest of my golfing buddies down to show off Newton’s new course! Please pass along my compliments to your staff.

Just a note to let you know we had a great time playing your course and a great experience with the personnel. Let me take a brief moment to let you know how it went. Two days ago I called to set up a tee time for myself and the GM at our dealership. I was pleasantly greeted over the phone by one of your staff who arranged the time and also gave me directions to Sand Creek Station. As we were walking to the club house another one of your staff said he would leave a cart for us by our truck so we could load up when we were ready. The course was in beautiful shape and all of the personnel were helpful and very courteous. I have played many courses both public and private and this certainly ranks among the top. Thanks again and I can assure you the next time we are up, I will bring a foursome. See you again real soon.

As they say, "your worst day on the golf course is better than your best day at work." What happens when you have three great days on the golf course...you absolutely hate going back to work on Monday. My brother-in-law and I arrived in Newton traveling from Chicago not really knowing what to expect, except the rumors that I kept hearing about the best new golf course in the area. In three days we played 108 holes of golf in the area and 72 of those holes were on your course. My only mistake in the entire trip was not scheduling all 108 holes there in Newton. Everything was great from the service in the pro shop, the food in the restaurant to the course being in great shape. During play we were never held up and actually finished each round in approximately 4 hours. Just what you want when you are playing 36 holes a day. Every October, we will be back, except this time we will be playing it all right there in Newton. Kudos to you and your team!!
